A SHORT HISTORY

The Queen Who Needed Her Brothers Guidance

About this story

Marie Antoinette

When fourteen-year-old Marie Antoinette married the future King Louis XVI in 1770, the entire French court expected an immediate royal pregnancy. Instead, what followed was seven agonizing years of total reproductive failure that turned the young archduchess into a public laughingstock.

Behind the glittering facade of Versailles, Marie Antoinette was enduring a deeply frustrating nightmare. Her mother, Empress Maria Theresa, bombarded her with brutal, anxious letters from Austria, relentlessly blaming her for failing to secure the political alliance.

Pamphleteers in Paris mocked her as barren and cold. But the issue wasn't Marie Antoinette at all—it was Louis. The young king suffered from a painful physical condition (highly believed by historians to be phimosis), which made intimacy incredibly agonizing and functionally impossible. Out of fear and embarrassment, Louis completely avoided fulfilling his marital duties.

Desperate to save the monarchy, Marie Antoinette’s older brother, Emperor Joseph II, personally traveled to France in 1777 to intervene. In a series of blunt, awkward, man-to-man talks, Joseph gave the young king explicit anatomical instructions and marital advice.

The intervention worked. Shortly after, the marriage was finally consummated, and in December 1778, after nearly a decade of unfair public scrutiny, Marie Antoinette finally gave birth to her first child, achieving a hard-won success.
