A SHORT HISTORY

The Archduchess Promised To A Cousin But Married Her Uncle

About this story

Anna of Austria

Born in 1549 in Spain and raised in Vienna, Archduchess Anna of Austria was the eldest daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II and Maria of Spain. Through her mother, she was the niece of King Philip II of Spain. Initially, Habsburg dynastic strategy slated Anna to marry Philip's troubled son and heir, Don Carlos, Prince of Asturias. That arrangement collapsed in 1568 with the sudden death of Don Carlos while under royal arrest, followed months later by the death of Philip's third wife, Elisabeth of Valois, which left the Spanish monarchy without a living male heir.

Facing a severe succession crisis, the forty-two-year-old Philip secured a papal dispensation to marry his twenty-one-year-old niece. The marriage took place in Segovia in the autumn of 1570. Despite the significant age gap and rigid Spanish court etiquette, Anna quickly earned the devotion of her husband and the admiration of the Castilian nobility. Known for her piety and warmth, she brought a renewedj sense of domestic life to the somber royal court at the Alcázar and the newly constructed El Escorial palace, while also serving as an affectionate stepmother to Philip's two young daughters.

Anna's primary political duty was to secure the succession, an obligation she fulfilled through five pregnancies. Although her first three sons died in early childhood, she gave birth in April 1578 to the future King Philip III, successfully ensuring the direct continuation of the Spanish Habsburg line.

In 1580, following the death of King Henry of Portugal without heirs, Philip moved to claim the Portuguese crown. Anna accompanied her husband on the military and diplomatic progress toward Lisbon. While stationed near the border at Badajoz, an outbreak of epidemic influenza struck the royal retinue. Both monarchs fell severely ill; while Philip survived, Anna succumbed to complications of the infection in October 1580 at the age of thirty. Devastated by her death, Philip II dressed in mourning for the rest of his life and refused all pressure to remarry, leaving Anna as the fourth and final queen of his reign.
