A LONGER STORY
How Elizabeth I Survived Her Sister: The Road Back to Hatfield
About this story
Elizabeth I · Mary I
In March 1554, Elizabeth Tudor was sent to the Tower of London by her own sister, Queen Mary I. For the next year and a half she lived under guard, first at Woodstock and then at Hampton Court, never knowing whether she would live or die. Then, on 18 October 1555, a letter finally gave her leave to go home to Hatfield. This is the story of how Elizabeth's imprisonment ended, and how close England came to never having its greatest queen.
