A SHORT HISTORY

These Four Queens Were Pregnant Fifty Times

About this story

Maria Carolina of Austria · Caroline Matilda of Great Britain · Maria Josepha of Saxony · Queen Anne

The Royal Women Who Paid the Price of Dynasty

Maria Carolina of Austria was married at sixteen and endured eighteen pregnancies. Her body became part of the politics of Naples, expected to produce heirs while her husband lived freely and the court demanded more.

Caroline Matilda of Great Britain was married at fifteen to the King of Denmark. She became a mother inside a miserable court, then was disgraced, separated from her children, and sent into exile before she was twenty-four.

Maria Josepha of Saxony was not a queen, but the Dauphine of France. At Versailles, she endured repeated pregnancies, gave birth to the future Louis XVI, and buried children while still being judged by what her body could provide.

Queen Anne was pregnant again and again, but no child lived to inherit her throne. Her son William survived the longest, then died at eleven. Her grief became a crisis for the whole kingdom.

These women lived in palaces, but the gold walls did not protect them. Their bodies carried dynasties, alliances, heirs, disappointments, and grief. History remembers the crowns. It should also remember the cost.
